Its name comes from the Brie region and the town of Meaux in Seine-et-Marne. It has held AOC status since 1980 and AOP status since 1996. It is shaped as a flat cylinder 36 to 37 centimetres across, and after 6 to 8 weeks this cheese is matured right through. It has a delicate scent of cream, butter and hazelnuts.
